Network Installation and Modifications

The University of Western Ontario operated a small 3 station FM network (LDN, ELF and DLA) near London, Ontario from 1976 to 1999. These stations were augmented with 2 Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) stations (EFO in the Niagara Peninsula and SADO on the Canadian Shield east of Georgian Bay).

The first 4 SOSN stations (WLVO, ACTO, TYNO and STCO) were completed late in 1991. These were our first digital stations and were all 3 component short-period stations. The next 2 stations (BRCO and PKRO) were added in 1996 to provide an improvement of the coverage of the ground motion within 20 km of the Bruce and Pickering nuclear power stations. Communication to the headquarters at the UWO was done by phone line. Four temporary remote call-up stations (RD01, RD02, RD03, and RD04) were added in 1999 to obtain more information concerning the nature of the cluster of earthquakes in the Hamilton-Burlington area. These provided data until 2007 when they were discontinued. In 1999 one of the former UWO network stations (LDN) near London Ontario was upgraded and also added to the SOSN network. The other FM stations (ELF and DLA) were discontinued.

The SOSN seismic stations installed before 2000 were originally short period stations. In 2002 -2003 the SOSN stations were upgraded to broad-band stations and became part of the nation-wide POLARIS network. After 2002 twenty new broad-band POLARIS stations were also installed in southern Ontario to improve the coverage.

The POLARIS project in Southern Ontario was reduced in size in Ontario in 2007. Some of the POLARIS stations have been discontinued. (e. g. PTCO, ELGO, HGVO). Three borehole stations were added in 2007 to provide additional information on the seismicity of the region near the Bruce nuclear power station. The Darlington stations were added in 2007 to measure vibration levels near the Darlington nuclear power plant.
